Mindfully Speaking With Students: Classroom Management Tips

Below, you will find some best practices when mindfully speaking with students. These tools have been used successfully across thousands of classrooms nationwide:

A little complement (when genuine!) can go a long way. Both within and without of class, try using the following time-tested phrase:

  • “[Name of student], I just want you to know how grateful I am that you are part of our learning community. Your insights about [mention specific contribution] have truly enriched us. Thank you and keep up the great work!”

Keep discipline positive, quiet, and impersonal:

  • Avoid “I don’t care”
  • “So far we have ___% leadership. We need 100%”
  • Correct off-task behavior with a curious look/pause
  • Be reflective vs. reactive
